What Is IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the most widely accepted English proficiency exam for university admissions in Singapore, the UK, Australia, and across Asia. It is managed by the British Council, IDP, and Cambridge Assessment English.
IELTS Academic is the version required for university applications. It is accepted by all six autonomous universities in Singapore and by English-taught programmes at Chinese universities.
Your IELTS band score directly affects which universities and courses you are eligible to apply for. A higher score opens more options.

IELTS Academic Exam Format
Listening
40 questions. 30 minutes. Recordings of conversations and monologues.
Reading
40 questions. 60 minutes. Three long reading passages with tasks.
Writing
2 tasks. 60 minutes. Task 1: Describe a chart or diagram. Task 2: Write an essay.
Speaking
Face-to-face interview with an examiner. 11 to 14 minutes. Three parts: introduction, topic card, and discussion.
Each section is scored from 0 to 9. Your overall band score is the average of all four sections, rounded to the nearest half band.
