HSK 汉语水平考试
Prep Course Online

Most Chinese-taught degree programmes require HSK 5 or HSK 6 for admission. We help you build from your current level to the score your target university requires, on a timeline that fits your application.

What Is HSK?

The 汉语水平考试 (HSK) is the official standardised Chinese language proficiency test, developed by Hanban and recognised by universities and employers across China. If you are applying for a Chinese-taught programme, your HSK level determines your eligibility and academic readiness.

HSK is required by top universities, including Tsinghua, Peking, Fudan, and Shanghai Jiao Tong. Some universities waive the HSK requirement for UEC holders or students with a Chinese-medium education background.

Level Proficiency University Use
HSK 1 to 3 Basic to elementary Foundation year or language bridging
HSK 4 Intermediate Some diploma programmes and pre-university entry
HSK 5 Advanced Minimum for most undergraduate degree programmes
HSK 6 Near-fluent Required for competitive programmes at top universities

HSK Levels and University Requirements

Most students targeting Chinese-taught degrees need to reach HSK 5 at a minimum. Competitive programmes at Tsinghua, Peking, and Fudan typically require HSK 6.

What HSK Tests

HSK assesses three skills at all levels. The higher the level, the more complex the tasks:

Listening

Audio-based questions testing comprehension of conversations, announcements, and spoken passages.

Reading

Reading comprehension tasks including fill-in-the-blank, matching, and passage-based questions.

Writing

Character writing, sentence construction, and short essay tasks. Writing is assessed from HSK 3 onwards and becomes critical at HSK 5 and 6.

HSK is a written exam. If your university also requires proof of spoken Mandarin, the HSKK (speaking test) is a separate assessment.
